You never get her face. She has turned it away, eyes closed, somewhere on the night bus between one stop and the next.
What you get instead is everything above her head. Hair and air erupting into loose brushed blooms — magenta, cobalt, gold, emerald — off a thick black contour line and deep warm skin, set against a flat two-colour New York ground with one simplified piece of the city behind her.
The part people only see after you tell them
The colour grows upward. Out of her, not around her. Follow the brushwork and the bloom reads less like decoration and more like the only thing keeping her upright — a tired woman at the end of a shift, floating a half inch off the seat. That is the whole picture: exhaustion made buoyant by colour alone.
Naomi keeps the likeness out of reach on purpose. I keep the face out of reach. The body says enough. You are close enough to be in the row behind her, and she still does not have to pose for you. The critic Charlotte called it “a bold and confident work that perfectly captures the energetic spirit of a city night,” and scored it accordingly.
Getting it up there
A high quality print of a digital artwork on archival matte paper with pigment inks. Smooth and non-reflective, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the blooms back instead of a glare. Printed edge to edge, no white border, which means the colour runs right to the paper’s edge — it looks right pinned up bare, or dropped straight into a frame you already own.
Portrait. Most walls take the 18 x 24 in (46 x 61 cm) at $49; the 12 x 16 in (30 x 41 cm) is $29 and the 24 x 32 in (61 x 81 cm) is $69. A quick rule: aim for about two-thirds the width of whatever furniture sits beneath it. Rolled in a tube, made to order in up to ten business days, free shipping in the continental US. Nobody on your street has this one.
One honest thing
It is loud. If you want art that agrees with your sofa, this will argue all day. If you want a wall that feels braver than you did this morning, take it home — or go see the rest of Naomi’s blooms, and follow her if you want the next one first.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Naomi Brooks available.
