The boats are already up on the slip. Nobody is going back out tonight.
It is Christmas Eve in Vernazza, the harbour has gone cold and blue, and somebody has walked down to the quay and switched on the tree. One small warm point in an ancient stone harbour. That is the whole picture.
Look at which light is warmest
The windows stacked up the cliff are lit too, rose and ochre going up the rock. But every one of them is a half-step cooler than that tree. Marco does this in every harbour he paints: exactly one light warmer than all the others, so your eye lands there and stays. Find the ridge where the knife lifted off the water. Paint straight from the tube, thick enough to cast its own small shadow under your lamp. Nothing smoothed after. “I do not own a brush. Everything here came off the knife.”
He never takes the postcard angle either. You are one step down an alley, one table back, the way you would actually see it if you were there with cold hands.
Charlotte, one of our critics, put it plainly: “The warmth of the lit windows and tree offers a captivating contrast against the cool dusk.” She scored it 8 out of 10.
What it does in your room
In warm lamplight the dark water stops being flat and starts throwing little shadows off its own ridges. People see the texture from the doorway, then come closer. Anyone who spent a Christmas week in Cinque Terre will stop mid-sentence.
Getting it up there
Matte canvas, an inch and a quarter deep, image wrapped round the sides, and it arrives ready to hang. One nail, no frame, no glass, no extra bill. Made to order, up to ten business days, so nobody on your street will have this one. Free shipping in the continental US.
Portrait: 12×16 in (30×41 cm) $129, 18×24 in (46×61 cm) $149, 24×32 in (61×81 cm) $229. A high quality print of a digital artwork, and the price on the work is the price. One rule for portrait pictures: hang it a little higher than feels right, with the middle at your eye level, and it stops looking like it slid down the wall.
Who should skip it
If your room is cool, grey and smooth, this will fight it. Every decision is left visible on purpose.
If that glow is your kind of room, take it home. If not tonight, see the other harbours Marco has painted, or follow him and you will catch the next one first.
