Everything on the quay has just closed. And then you see it — one window, further along, still lit and still warm.
Nice’s old port at the end of the evening. The yellow and rose facades stacked over dark water, the orange sky going to deep blue, and the masts standing up through the whole picture like a fence you can see through. You have arrived late. It turns out late was fine.
What most people walk past
Count the lights. Every one of them is cool except that single window above the bar, and Marco made it warmer than anything else in the frame on purpose. Your eye finds it in about a second and then keeps returning to it. That is the entire painting: relief, painted in one colour.
Look also at the reflections on the water — broad slabs and dragged strokes, and where two colours meet there is no blending at all. The unblended join: the decision was made once and left, nothing smoothed after. I do not own a brush. Everything here came off the knife.
The viewpoint is one table back, one step down an alley. Never the postcard angle. Valentina, who scored this piece, put it plainly: “The painting vividly portrays the vibrant atmosphere of Nice’s old port at dusk.”
Living with it
It suits a hallway or a dining wall with warm light, over a sideboard, anywhere you pass rather than sit. Guests ask about the lit window first and the town second.
Getting it up there
A high quality print of a digital artwork on smooth archival matte paper, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the harbour back instead of a glare. Printed edge to edge, no white border — it drops straight into a frame you already own, and it looks right pinned up bare too. It arrives rolled in a tube, made to order in up to ten business days plus delivery, free shipping in the continental US.
Most people take the 18×24 (46×61 cm) at $49. Go to 24×32 (61×81 cm) if the wall is wide, or 12×16 (30×41 cm) for a narrow stretch beside a door. Useful rule: hang the middle of the picture about 58 inches off the floor, measured from the floor, not the ceiling.
One honest thing
This is a loud, warm picture. Terracotta, ochre, orange. If your rooms are grey and chrome and you want a calm, quiet surface, it will argue with them.
If it sounds like your kind of evening, take it home. If you want to sit with it, look through the rest of Marco’s harbours — or follow him, and you will see the next lit window before anyone else does.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Marco Bellini available.
