The sun has gone full orange. The paletero has stopped, the cart lid is up, and there’s a line of kids doing what kids do in a line — leaning, reaching, one hip stuck out, one arm already up with the money in it.

You can’t see one. The cold smoke rolling off the cart sits right where every face should be. Chris left it there on purpose and never resolved it.
So instead you read the hands. The postures. The kid pressed against the side of the cart, the one hanging back. You get the whole hunger and the whole block without a single kid you could pick out of a crowd. Which means every one of them is somebody you knew.
Then there’s the word. PALETAS, brushed straight onto the cart in fat wobbly letters, tilted with the cart the way real hand-painted signs are. Thick black line over sprayed sunset orange, turquoise and hot pink, with the overspray and the drips left in.
