The fan is the whole joke

It is the only colour in the picture. Electric turquoise, flat and loud, held up high — not fanning, not fidgeting. Everything else has been drained by the sun. Look again and you will notice she is not slumped, not checking the time, not apologising for the size of her. The bus will come when it comes. The fan is not waiting for anyone.
