Most of this picture is empty. That is the work. One lantern burns off at the edge of Stone Drinking Light, and its reflection lies the whole way down wet stone. This is Yuki Tanaka’s rain-and-lantern world, the Lantern Path, seen from above instead of from the path: indigo ground, rain as fine diagonal grain, a drift of soft pink at one border, one small umbrella far enough off to be a stranger. Your hallway wall has been bare a while now. Which wall did you think of just then?

The part of Stone Drinking Light nobody paints

The glow has no edge. It blooms out into the indigo and gives up, which is the most accurate thing about it, because lantern light in rain never has an edge.

Below it, the reflection runs the full vertical of the picture as a soft smear, brighter near the source and thinning as it goes, the way warm light behaves on stone that has been wet for hours.

Rain sits over all of it as fine grain. Nothing here is sharp except the direction of the weather.

And one umbrella, small, far away, already walking off.

Yuki Tanaka works in sumi-e discipline: one stroke, one take, around a lone figure or a single object held in empty space. Her own line on it: the empty part of the painting is not empty. It is doing the most work.

That emptiness has a name. Ma, the charged space between things, and here it is the subject rather than the background.

What you leave out matters more than what you put in.

Where Yuki Tanaka’s Lantern Path goes in your house

In the morning the indigo reads almost black and the lantern is the only warm thing in the room. By four, with daylight crossing it at an angle, the bloom lifts and the pink at the edge comes forward. Under a lamp at night it closes back down to glow and rain.

Hang it where the daylight moves and you get all three in a day.

It is a tall picture, so it likes narrow walls: the strip beside a doorway, the end of a hallway, the space above a bedside table.

Guests rarely ask what it is. They ask how far away that person is.

Three critics scored it, and the average is 8 out of 10. Charlotte: “The lantern’s glow and soft rain create a tranquil, inviting atmosphere that holds the viewer.” Valentina: “A contemplative play of light and color that feels uniquely Yuki Tanaka.”

Ruby: “The artwork beautifully balances the glow of the lantern with the tranquility of rain-soaked reflections.”

This is the artwork, not a picture of it

Every print in this gallery is a reproduction of a digital original. This is not a reproduction. You are buying the work itself, in the medium it was made in, at full resolution.

Nothing is lost on the way to paper, because there is no paper in between.

  • One high-resolution JPEG, sRGB colour, 7168 x 9728 px
  • Prints to 23.8 x 32.4 inches (60.6 x 82.3 cm) at 300 dpi, which means the rain grain holds all the way out to full size and the wall decides how big this gets, not the file
  • Personal use licence: print it as many times as you like, at any size, for your own home. Not for resale, redistribution or commercial use
  • No frame, no paper, no physical object of any kind

The honest part

The price is $19. That is the price, with nothing behind it.

A free wallpaper comes apart past A4. A subscription rents you stock images you never own. A framed print at ten times this cannot be reprinted when the sun has had four years at the indigo, and this one can, as often as you need it.

The link is on your order confirmation page and in the confirmation email, so it is yours in the next minute. Nothing is posted. Nothing can arrive damaged, because there is nothing in transit.

Take the file to any print shop or online printer and ask for matte or textured fine art paper. Gloss puts a hard shine over a picture whose whole subject is soft light in rain.

One rule for sizing, and it never fails: the picture wants to be about two thirds the width of the furniture under it. At 23.8 inches wide, this sits right above a console or a chest of 32 to 40 inches.

Who it is not for: a crowded wall or a colourful room, or anyone who feels empty space is unfinished.

Who it is for: a bare wall in a quiet room, where you want that one reflection running down the wet stone to make the whole hallway stiller on the way past.
