Your eye goes to her hand first, because it is the only thing in the picture holding still enough to look at.

Fingers sharp against the strings. Everything below them has come apart into a fan of bronze lines, moving too fast to sit still on the linen. And her face is already turned away, out toward the window and the blue.

Try to count the strings

You cannot. Isabelle blurred them on purpose, so the strum is happening but never finishes. The chord is caught in the half second before it lands, and her attention has already left the room ahead of the sound. That is the whole picture: two things leaving at once, neither of them arrived.

She paints like this every time. A musician between sets, a dancer between beats, nobody looking up, nobody asked to. Cadmium red on the wall, cobalt in the window, knife-loaded colour on the fabric to carry the movement. One critic called it a bold interplay of cadmium and cobalt, and that is exactly what it is doing to your eye right now.

What happens after it goes up

Rooms with this in them feel like something just started. It works where people move past it and glance up twice, a hallway, a kitchen wall, the space behind a table where guests sit. Warm light makes the red hum. At the end of the day the cobalt takes over and the whole thing cools down.

Out of the box and onto the nail

Canvas with a visible weave, so the surface reads as paint rather than a photo of paint. It is stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, with the image carried around the edges, and it arrives ready to hang. One nail, two minutes, no frame to buy. Matte, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you her hand back instead of a glare. Made to order, which means nobody on your street has this one.

The 16×20 (41 x 51 cm) is the one most people choose and it comes preselected: $149. The 12×16 is $129, the 18×24 is $229. High quality prints of Isabelle’s digital work, free shipping in the continental US.

One honest thing

It is loud with colour. If your room is all soft greys and you want it to stay calm, this will not stay calm. If you like a wall that has something happening on it, take it home. Or go look at the rest of Isabelle’s cafés and balconies first, and follow her, so the next one reaches you before it reaches anybody else.
