Put this where you make coffee.

Because that is the hour it was painted for, and at seven in the morning with the kettle going it gives you back an evening you had somewhere else.

A side canal in Venice, seen from a table nobody has cleared yet. Rose walls peeling above dark water. A lantern that has just been lit, warmer than anything else in the frame. And a glass, poured, half gone.

The glass is the whole painting

Marco left it half empty on purpose. A full glass would mean you had just sat down. An empty one would mean you had gone. Half means someone is still there, still talking, and the evening is not over. That is why this reads like your own memory instead of a postcard – the scene is waiting for you to come back to the table.

Notice too that you are one table back from the water. He never paints the postcard angle. You are in it, not looking at it. Valentina put it well: “The thick impasto and warm glow capture the essence of a quiet Venetian canal at dusk.”

What it does to a room

The knife-dragged ridges in the reflections stand up off the surface, so the light in your kitchen changes what the water is doing. Morning goes cool and quiet. Evening lamps find the lantern and the whole canal warms up. People lean in. Then they ask if you have been.

Getting it up

Canvas stretched over solid wood, an inch and a quarter deep, arriving ready to hang. One nail, two minutes, no frame to buy and no glass to fight. The image runs around the edges, so it looks finished from the side too. Matte, so a window opposite gives you the painting instead of your own reflection.

The 20 x 16 in (51 x 41 cm) landscape is preselected and suits most walls – there is a smaller and a larger if yours says otherwise. $149, a high quality print made to order, free shipping in the continental US, and nobody on your street will have it.

One honest thing

This is a warm painting. Terracotta, ochre, rose, orange fading into deep blue. If your rooms are all cool grey and hard edges, it will argue. If there is wood or books or one good rug, it belongs there by the weekend.

Take it home if that is your kitchen. If you are still thinking, look through the rest of Marco’s harbours – or follow him, and the next lit window shows up on your feed before anywhere else.
