The part you only see the second time
Follow the red from where it enters to where it stops. It does not fade out politely. It ends. The paint looks thick where it lands, ridges standing up off the surface, drag marks where the brush ran out of load and kept going anyway. That is the decision. Most painters would have gone back and softened the join. She didn’t return to it.
The blue does the real work, though. It is cold – properly cold – and it is what makes the red feel like it happened to you rather than in front of you.
