Four in the afternoon, the light in the room goes flat and everything in it looks a little tired. Except the hat.
A palm tree is bent double. Not leaning – folded, the way they go when the wind has decided something. And underneath it a man stands with one arm up, holding his hat on, and the hat is hot pink.
Everything in the picture gives in except the hat
Here is the part people miss on the first look. The hat is the only colour in the whole thing. The man is a black spray-stencil with soft overspray at the edges and a drip or two left where it ran. The wall behind him is sun-bleached pastel plaster, cracked, with a patch where something older was painted over. Luna cut all of that in black and then sprayed exactly one element hot pink, and it does the whole joke by itself. The world bends. He does not.
That restraint is hers. Every Luna Vasquez piece is a dry joke with a Miami motif tucked in – here it is the palm, folded in half, doing the submitting for everybody. As she puts it: loud is a choice, and she keeps choosing it. Ruby, one of our critics, scored it and wrote: “This artwork is a perfect blend of humor and technique, capturing the essence of Miami life in one dynamic scene.” It averaged 8.33.
On the wall by the time you finish your coffee
Canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, image running round the sides so there is no bare edge and no frame to buy. It arrives ready to hang – one nail, done. Matte, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the picture back instead of a glare.
Most people take the 24 x 18 in (61 x 46 cm) at $149. The small 16 x 12 in (41 x 30 cm) is $129 and the big 32 x 24 in (81 x 61 cm) is $229. That is the price, flat, no bidding. A high quality print, made to order, free shipping in the continental US.
Who should skip it
Not a bedroom. Nothing about this says rest. And if you want the art to agree with the sofa, this will not. Put it in a hallway you walk through fast, or over the bar, or in the kitchen where people stand around talking – it greets them before you do.
Take it home if that is your kind of room. Or go see the rest of what Luna has sprayed, and follow her while you are there, so the next one reaches you before anyone else.
