There is no caption in this picture. No sign, no lettering, nothing that tells you what the joke is.
You work it out in about a second and a half. An old man and a pelican, bent over a game of dominoes. He is teaching. The bird is paying attention.
The bit that makes it land
One domino is hot pink. Everything else is black stencil on sun-bleached plaster, with cracks, a faded patch someone painted over long ago, and a couple of drips left exactly where they fell. So the only colour in the whole frame is the piece being played. Your eye lands there, then moves to the two heads leaning in, and that is when you see it: man and bird are leaning at the same angle. Same concentration. That is the whole gag, and nobody had to write it down.
The dominoes are the Miami detail tucked in, and anyone who grew up around that table will clock it first. Luna Vasquez works this way on purpose: clean stencil, a wall that has seen things, one hot colour to make the point. As she puts it, loud is a choice, and she keeps choosing it. Critic Ruby gave it an 8.67 and called the deadpan humour “a perfect snapshot of Cuban-American Miami life.”
Once it is up
Canvas, matte, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, with the image running round the edges. It arrives ready to hang, so it is one nail and two minutes, not a framer and a bill you did not plan for. Matte means a lamp or a window opposite gives you the picture back instead of a bright white blob.
Landscape. Most people take the 24×18 in (61 x 46 cm) at $149 for a kitchen or a bar wall. 16×12 in (41 x 30 cm) is $129, 32×24 in (61 x 45.7 cm) is $229. That is the price, flat, no bidding, no discount coming. Made to order in up to ten business days, free shipping in the continental US, and a high quality print of a digital artwork rather than something your neighbour also owns.
Who should skip it
Not a bedroom. It is a joke told at volume, and it does not want to match your sofa. Hallway, kitchen, bar wall, anywhere you walk through fast and want to be greeted.
Take it home if your kitchen can take a laugh. If you want to sit with it, go look at the rest of Luna’s walls, or follow her and you will see the next one before it hits the page.
