The umbrella is clear. That is the decision, and almost nobody catches it.

A coloured umbrella would have blocked the light. This one lets the vending machine glow pass straight through and scatter across the dome, so the thing meant to keep the rain off has quietly become a lantern. The umbrella isn’t keeping the light out. It’s keeping it.

Who that is under there

A backstreet at dusk, indigo first, never blue-and-orange. Wet stone reads as broad knife-cut slabs of colour, every light in the street doubled in the ground. The figure’s head is bowed into whatever they’re reading, face out of view, absorbed and alone and perfectly fine about it.

Yuki builds the rain first, the light second, and the figure last, always alone. One figure in vast space: the scale of a room against the scale of a person. And the space around them is the point. As she says it, the empty part of the painting is not empty. It is doing the most work. Also hers, word for word: “I painted this in eleven minutes. It took four years to be able to.”

Our critics averaged it 8 out of 10. Charlotte’s sentence: “Vending machine glow brings a dynamic vibrancy to the dusky backstreet scene.”

What it does in a hallway

Umbrella Drinking Neon – Yuki Tanaka | Fine Art PrintIt makes the room stiller. Morning light cools it down. After dark, under a lamp, the neon in the umbrella comes forward and guests stop on their way past to ask what they’re reading. Nobody knows. That’s the good part.

Sizes, price, done

A useful rule: hang it at about two-thirds the width of whatever furniture sits below it, centre of the picture at eye height.

Archival matte paper with pigment inks, smooth and non-reflective, so a window opposite gives you the rain back instead of your own ceiling light. Printed edge to edge with no white border, so colour runs right to the edge and it drops into a frame you already own or looks right pinned up bare. It arrives rolled in a protective tube.

Landscape, 24 x 18 in (61 x 46 cm) at $49 is preselected and suits most walls. 16 x 12 in (41 x 30 cm) is $29 for a narrow spot. 32 x 24 in (81 x 61 cm) is $69 above a bed or a sofa. That is the price, no bidding, no premium. It’s a high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order in up to ten business days plus delivery, with free shipping in the continental US.

One honest thing

This one is for a bare wall in a quiet room, a hallway or a bedroom. It is not for a crowded wall or a colourful room, or for anyone who feels empty space looks unfinished.

Umbrella Drinking Neon – Yuki Tanaka | Fine Art PrintIf that’s your wall, take it home. If you’re still deciding, look through the rest of Yuki’s rain-lit streets, or follow her and you’ll see the next one before anyone else.

One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.

Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Yuki Tanaka available.
