Sizes & materials

Stretched cotton canvas on a 38 mm wooden frame, matte surface. The image wraps the sides, so there is no white border at the edge, and it arrives ready to hang — no framing, no glass, no extra bill.

Why this one

A whole grey street, and one door having a far better day than the others.

Kai: “Built the street properly. Every door the same, every line straight. Then number seventeen went off.”

  • 9/10CharlotteThis dynamic piece erupts with color against the grey, catching every glance.
  • 8/10ValentinaThe dynamic clash of precise greys against explosive color creates a compelling balance.
  • 9/10RubyA striking composition where color erupts with vibrancy against a disciplined grey canvas, achieving the intended graphic collision.

A whole street drawn with a ruler, and one door that has clearly lost control.

The terrace runs up the picture in flat London greys. Hard edges, clean lines, every door the same as the last. Then colour tears out of one of them — orange, magenta, cyan, yellow — poured and sprayed and running down the steps in real drips.

Count along the row

It is the seventeenth door. That is the joke and that is the whole thing: somebody in that house is having a much better day than everybody else on the street, and nobody outside knows yet. The figures Kai puts in are silhouettes, turned away. No faces. They are not looking.

Here is the part you notice on the second look. The burst is leaving the door. It does not sit neatly behind the subject or frame it like decoration — it is going somewhere, out and down and off the grey. Kai builds the tidy world exactly, to the millimetre, then lets one thing go completely. One burst per piece. Never two.

Ruby, one of our critics, called it “a striking composition where color erupts with vibrancy against a disciplined grey canvas.” Fair. The greys hold their nerve and the spray never does.

What happens once it is up

It gives a room energy without putting a word on your wall. No slogan, no motivational nonsense. People walk in, look at the grey, then find the orange, then start counting doors out loud. That is the conversation, every time.

Getting it on the wall

Canvas, matte, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep — it arrives ready to hang. One nail and you are done. No frame to buy, no glass to catch your ceiling light, and the image wraps the edges so it looks finished from the side too. The pour needs a surface like this; on canvas the drips stand off the grey and read as weight.

Most people take the 16×20 (41 x 51 cm) at $149 — that is the one already selected. Go 12×16 (30 x 41 cm) at $129 for a desk wall, or 18×24 (46 x 61 cm) at $229 if it is going above a sofa. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order, so nobody else on your street has this one. Free shipping in the continental US.

One honest thing

This is loud on purpose. If you like your walls soft and tonal, the colour will fight you. If you want something that makes a plain room look awake, take it home — or have a look through the rest of Kai’s grey-burst work, and follow him if you want to see the next door open first.
