Wheel Suspended Tangerine: the face stays flat, the air blooms

A profile held against the Coney Island wheel, the likeness withheld, the colour spilling everywhere but the face.

I am Naomi Brooks. I paint profiles in New York—bold contours, deep warm skin tones, the likeness withheld. The colour blooms into the hair and the air around the figure, never into the face itself. The face stays flat. This one is held against the Coney Island wheel, and the tangerine spills everywhere but the silhouette.

Ruby said the dynamic brushwork and vibrant colours make this piece stand out. She is right about the brushwork. I disagree about standing out being the point.

The colour blooms because it has nowhere else to go once the face is locked. That is the structure.

The wheel is one flat ground

The Coney Island wheel sits behind the profile as a single graphic shape, no depth, no perspective. It is an icon, not a place. I painted it flat because the figure is flat and the two have to hold the same plane.

The tangerine and coral tones came from the light that afternoon, but I pushed them warmer than they were. The wheel suspended the figure in colour, so I let the colour suspend the wheel.

The profile withholds the likeness

I spent a month photographing this person before I painted them. You earn the right to paint someone; the trust has to come before the paint. The profile shows the person without exposing them.

The contour is confident because the reference was deep. The face stays out of reach. The body says enough.

Valentina called this an energetic blend of vibrant colour and bold contour. The energy is not in the colour; it is in the decision to leave the face alone.

The bloom happens in the air and the hair

Once the silhouette is locked, the colour can move. I let it spill into the hair and the air around the figure—loose, brushed, uncontained. The face is a held line; everything else blooms.

The texture came from working wet into wet in some areas and letting other sections dry before the next layer. You can see where the paint moved and where it stopped.

For: Someone who wants a bold profile on the wall, a New York ground, and colour that does not apologise. A living room, a study, a bedroom where the picture can hold a wall on its own.
Not for: Anyone who needs the face to be readable, or a hallway where guests expect something quiet.
