Why this one

The argument ended. Nobody told the colour.

“The argument was over long before I started pouring. Didn't matter. The colour hadn't heard yet. Warmth going out on the diagonal, cool coming in over the top of it, and one orange vertical standing there refusing to resolve into anything. I left every edge soft. Nothing to hold onto, nothing to settle. You can look at this a long time and still not get a verdict. Words Already Gone, up on the site now.”

Anya Volkov, on the piece

The argument ended. The colour did not stop. Words Already Gone is Anya Volkov’s poured colour-stain abstraction, warmth pulling away on a diagonal while cool floods in behind it, and one orange vertical stain standing alone in the middle of the field, unresolved. You have a wall that has been quiet for years. Not empty, exactly. Furnished, hung, finished on paper, and nobody has ever stopped talking on their way past it. Which wall did you just think of?

What the colour is doing in Words Already Gone

Thin washes, soaked in rather than laid on top.

Where two colours meet the boundary is left porous, no drawn edge, no seam, just one field bleeding into the next until you cannot say where the warmth gave up its ground.

No impasto. Nothing standing off the surface, nothing dragged. This is the stain before the gesture, colour carrying the whole thing on its own.

And then the orange.

One vertical, off centre, holding position in a field that is otherwise in retreat. Your eye lands there first and comes back there last. In a picture with no subject, it is the only place to stand.

Charlotte, reviewing it: “The colour is still moving after the argument ended—and the buyer knows it the moment they see it.” Valentina was blunter: “Colour still moving—a poured abstraction that stops a room without shouting.”

Where Anya Volkov’s poured abstraction lands in your room

Hang it where the daylight moves.

Morning belongs to the cool side, the blues sitting forward, the warmth reading like something remembered. By late afternoon the light comes in low and sideways, and the orange lifts clean off the cool the way a lamp does when someone switches it on. Same file, two paintings.

It goes above the sideboard, or on the long hall wall where people slow down without meaning to.

The first time you have people over after it is up, someone stops mid-sentence and asks what it is. You will not have a tidy answer. Neither did anyone who reviewed it.

What does anyone ask about, on the wall you are looking at now?

Every print in this gallery is a reproduction of a digital original. This one is not a reproduction. It is the work itself, at full resolution, in the medium it was actually made in.

The honest part

What you get is one file, and that file is the artwork.

  • One high-resolution JPEG, sRGB colour
  • 7168 x 9728 px, 23.8 x 32.4 in (60.6 x 82.3 cm) at 300 dpi
  • Largest sensible print: 23.8 x 32.4 inches (60.6 x 82.3 cm)
  • Personal use: print it as often as you like, at any size, for your own home. Not for resale, redistribution or commercial use
  • No frame, no paper, no physical object of any kind
  • $19

Nothing is posted and nothing can arrive damaged. The link sits on your order confirmation page and in the confirmation email, so the file is yours before you have finished deciding where it goes.

Nearly ten thousand pixels down the long edge means the deep cool at the top keeps its grain at the full size above, and the soft boundaries stay soft instead of breaking into steps. The wall decides how big this gets, not the file.

Getting it onto paper, and the price of doing it twice

Ask a print shop for a fine art giclee on matte or textured cotton rag. No gloss, because a shine closes down washes that need to stay open. Tell them to print at 100 per cent, no upscaling, no sharpening.

Measure the furniture underneath before you commit to a size. A sideboard or console between 36 and 48 inches wide (90 to 120 cm) carries this at full size; anything narrower, scale the print down and the proportion holds.

A free wallpaper falls apart past A4. A subscription rents you stock images and stops the day you stop paying. A framed print at ten times this price hangs in one size forever, and when four summers of window light have thinned it, you buy the whole thing again.

You own this one. Print it for the hall now, print it again in eight years when the first has faded, print it a third time for the room you have not moved into yet. Nineteen dollars, once.

The orange is in every version of it. That is the one you will be looking at.
