Sizes & materials

Stretched cotton canvas on a 38 mm wooden frame, matte surface. The image wraps the sides, so there is no white border at the edge, and it arrives ready to hang — no framing, no glass, no extra bill.

Sizes: 12 × 16 in · 16 × 20 in · 18 × 24 in.

Why this one

A key, a moon, and one inch of hot orange between them. Somebody has to wind it.

Zara: “Title first: Winding the Impossible. He holds the key steady. The moon tears anyway.”

Your eye goes straight to the gap. A key, held up at arm’s length, and a moon it hasn’t quite reached. The whole picture is dark velvet twilight except for that one inch of hot orange where metal almost touches light.

And then you notice the moon’s edge is broken. Torn sideways into pixel blocks, red and blue splitting apart like a signal dropping out.

The joke with the serious middle

Look again at the figure. Costumed, simplified to a few strokes, face turned away. No expression to read, which means you can’t tell whether the winding is going well. Because look at what’s happening to the moon: he isn’t fixing it. He’s breaking it, or it’s breaking under him, and he is calmly carrying on with the job anyway.

That is Zara Moon’s whole method. One impossible rule, obeyed completely and without comment. Everything in the frame behaves like paint, and exactly one thing glitches, so you know whose hand it came out of. She writes the title first and then builds the stage around it. As Ruby put it, the piece “captivates with its dynamic composition and bold use of surreal elements.”

What happens once it’s up

People walk toward it. They go for the orange first, then they spot the broken edge, and then they ask you what’s going on in it. You will get to say the sentence out loud: somebody has to wind the moon. It reads well in a hallway, over a desk, anywhere you pass twice a day, because the glitch is the kind of detail you keep re-finding.

Getting it on your wall

Matte canvas, a fraction over an inch deep, stretched on solid wood with the image wrapped round the sides. It comes ready to hang, so it’s one nail and two minutes, no frame to buy and no glass bouncing your lamp back at you. Matte also means the orange stays orange even opposite a window. Made to order, printed when you order it, which is why nobody on your street will have this one. Free shipping in the continental US.

The 16×20 (41 x 51 cm) suits most walls and is already selected. Go 18×24 if it’s hanging above furniture, 12×16 if it’s a narrow bit of wall. $149 for the middle size, one price, no bidding.

One honest thing

It’s dark. Deep twilight ground with a single hot colour cutting through. If you like your art bright and sunny, this will feel like someone dimmed the lights. If you like being asked questions, take it home — or go see the rest of Zara’s stage sets, and follow her so the next one lands in front of you first.
