I am Anya Volkov. I work at four-metre scale because small gestures disappear under scrutiny. What I chase is the moment a painting tips from control into something that cannot be taken back – the physical truth of committing to a mark you have been avoiding for an hour.
This piece is the knife I finally let myself use.
I held the line back until I couldn’t
The pale field took three days to build. Not because it is complicated – because it is not. A quiet expanse earns its silence or it does not.
I walked past it forty times knowing what it needed. One vertical slash, dark and final, placed where it would cut the composition in half and mean it.
The relief when I made the mark was physical. Not because it was right. Because I stopped negotiating with myself.
The impasto is load-bearing
Texture at this scale is not decoration. It is the only thing holding the eye when you stand close enough to see the hesitation.
The pale ground is thick, built up in overlapping strokes that catch light differently depending on where you stand. The vertical slash sits on top, applied in one continuous pull with enough pressure that the knife scraped canvas underneath.
You can see where I started and where I ran out of paint. That is the honesty the piece requires.
Scale expressionism works in threes
This is the second in a trilogy of pieces about interruption. The first was about color meeting color. This one is about a single gesture breaking silence.
The third will be about what happens when you make the same mark twice and mean something different. I have not painted it yet because I do not know what it will say.
