Nap Worth Everything: The Cat Chose Correctly

A cat asleep on guava pastries in a bakery window, one hot turquoise against cracked pastel.

I am Luna Vasquez. I spray-stencil figures on cracked Miami plaster with one hot colour and one deadpan joke about Cuban-American life per piece. This one is a cat who found the warmest spot in the bakery window and refused all better ideas.

The turquoise pastry is the one under the cat

Ruby called it playful contrast. I will take that.

Every pastel is painted the colour of old Calle Ocho plaster – pink, yellow, mint – except one. That one is electric turquoise, the colour of a pool you can see from the highway, and it is the pastry the cat is using as a pillow.

The joke only works if the hot colour is the thing getting slept on. A decorative turquoise pastry off to the side would be composition. This is the cat choosing comfort over respect and being completely correct about it.

The plaster cracks because that is Miami

The wall behind the window is cracked pastel plaster, which is every bakery, cafeteria and corner store I grew up walking past. Stucco that has been painted over ten times and is splitting along the same lines it split along in 1983.

I do not smooth it out. The cracks are load-bearing. Without them this is a cat on pastries. With them it is a piece of Miami someone will recognise before they read the title.

Valentina called it whimsical and I am letting that stand

Whimsical is not a word I use, but I know what she saw. The cat is painted with hard stencil edges the way I paint everything, but the position – paws tucked, eyes shut, completely committed to the nap – reads as warm. You believe the cat is happy.

Deadpan does not mean cold. It means I am not going to explain the joke, and the joke here is that the most valuable thing in this window is being used as furniture by something that does not pay rent.

This is for: Someone who grew up in a cafeteria or loves someone who did. A kitchen, a breakfast nook, a hallway in a house that already knows what a pastelito is.

This is not for: A formal dining room or anyone who wants the art to look expensive.
