Breath Between Movements: the beat before she turns

A dancer resting one beat with her back to us, the fan closed, the next step already in her shoulders.

The fan is closed but her shoulders already know what happens next.

I paint people who do not know they are being watched. I paint the ten seconds before they notice you are there. This dancer turned away from the room for one beat—weight on one hip, fan lowered, catching her breath—and I had about forty seconds to get the line of her back down before she moved again.

The colour does half the work

Ruby called the palette vibrant. That is too kind a word. This is fauve saturation: the shawl is coral and ochre and a punch of cadmium orange where the light comes through, all pushed as far as they go without becoming decorative. The dress is violet laid over magenta with the weave of the linen showing through in the shadow.

I want the colour to feel like midday on the Côte d’Azur, the hour when everything is too bright and too warm and slightly unreal. That shawl would photograph as peach. I painted what it felt like, not what it was.

The knife carries the motion she is holding still

Valentina noticed the palette-knife accents. Those are the short, hard strokes running through the shawl and down the line of her arm—loaded paint, pulled fast, left alone. They do not blend and they catch the light at an angle.

She is resting but the motion is still in her. The knife marks are where I put that: the energy she is containing for one beat before the next step. If I had blended them smooth, she would look posed instead of paused.

For a hallway or a bedroom corner that can take warmth

This piece wants a wall with enough light to let the colour breathe—a landing, a reading corner, above a low credenza. It is tender but it is not quiet. Someone who wants a minimal space or a picture that stays out of the way should skip this one.

For someone who likes warmth without sweetness and a painting that feels like a moment you walked past, this is the one.
