Returns

Anya stopped both gestures early. On purpose.

Two huge sweeps come at each other from either side of a portrait frame — one cobalt, one coral — and neither one finishes the trip. They stop maybe a finger’s width apart, and what is left between them is a bare strip of raw canvas running down the picture.

The gap is the whole thing

That sliver of nothing is where your eye goes and stays. It is the brightest, loudest part of the picture and there is nothing in it. Charlotte, one of our critics, put it like this: the collision of cobalt and coral “captures attention and refuses to let go.” But the collision never actually lands. That is the trick. You keep looking for the moment they meet and it is not there.

Anya works at wall scale — one or two movements filling the entire frame, flat colour, hard confident edges, no fussing. She wants colours that argue. She is not trying to soothe you.
