Why this one

A rooster in turquoise sunglasses takes the crosswalk, and a cop salutes him.

Luna: “He has the right of way and he knows it. One hot turquoise, one clean stencil, one salute.”

  • 8/10CharlotteThe rooster's swagger in aviators is sure to win a smile and the purchase.
  • 9/10ValentinaThe rooster's oversized turquoise sunglasses are the witty highlight, perfectly capturing the spirit of Cuban-American Miami life.
  • 8/10RubyThe rooster's bold sunglasses pop brilliantly against the sun-bleached background, embodying the spirit of Miami.

Most pictures on a wall get admired. This one gets laughed at, out loud, by someone standing in your kitchen holding a drink.

A rooster is using the crosswalk. Properly, in the white stripes, taking his time. He is wearing enormous turquoise sunglasses. And a traffic cop is saluting him.

The part that makes it land

Look at the cop. Luna cropped him at the neck – no head, no face, just the uniform and the hand snapped up to the brim that isn’t there. That’s why the joke works. A face would have told you how to feel about it. Without one, the salute is completely sincere, and the rooster accepts it as his due.

Then notice that everything in the picture is black spray-paint on sun-bleached plaster, cracked, with one faded patch where someone painted over something long ago. Everything except the sunglasses. One hot turquoise, sprayed on one element only. Luna does this every time – cuts the stencil clean, leaves exactly one colour, and lets it carry the whole punchline. As one critic put it, the sunglasses pop brilliantly against the sun-bleached background.

Where it goes

Crossing at Noon – Luna Vasquez | Fine Art PrintKitchen. Bar. The bit of hallway by the light switch. Anywhere someone is standing around waiting for coffee with nothing to look at. If you know Miami, or you left Miami, you’ll get it in half a second and you’ll send a photo of it to three people the same day.

Getting it up there

It’s a portrait print, and the 16×20 (41 x 51 cm) is the one most people pick – $49.00. The 11×14 (28 x 36 cm) is $29.00 and reads perfectly close up; 18×24 (46 x 61 cm) is $69.00 if the wall is wide. Museum-grade matte paper, so the plaster tone stays chalky and dusty instead of glossy, and a lamp opposite gives you the rooster back, not a glare. Printed edge to edge with no white border, so it looks right pinned up bare or dropped into a frame you already own. It arrives rolled in a tube, made to order, and shipping is free in the continental US.

One honest thing

It’s a joke. A dry one, with a point, but a joke. If you want a wall that’s calm and says nothing, this is the wrong print – it talks.

Crossing at Noon – Luna Vasquez | Fine Art PrintIf you’re grinning, take it home. If you want to see what else Luna has cut a stencil for, her other pieces are worth a scroll – or follow her and the next one shows up on your feed before it shows up anywhere else.

One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.

Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Luna Vasquez available.
