I’m Alex Ward. I build geometric abstractions where the colour does exactly what the structure tells it to. I keep coming back to the idea that a good composition should feel inevitable—like if you moved one edge, the entire piece would fall apart. Ruled Without Remainder is about finding proportions so clean they admit no argument.
The grid divides without a remainder
Every measurement in this piece is a whole-number ratio of every other measurement. Width relates to height, block relates to gap, colour zone relates to border. I spent two days moving lines by single pixels until everything divided cleanly.
Most geometric work accepts a little slop in the math—a ratio that runs to three decimal places, a block that is 47% of the width instead of half. This one does not. If a line sits where it sits, it is because the number is round and the division is exact.
That constraint is what makes it rigid. Also what makes it work.
Flat matte surfaces because texture is a distraction
I print these on matte stock with no sheen. A geometric abstraction lives or dies on whether the edges read as edges, and any surface variation pulls focus from the structure to the substrate.
The flatness is not about minimalism. It is about making sure the only thing you look at is whether the proportions hold. Matte means the colour stays where I put it, and the light does not get a vote.
The palette narrows as the grid tightens
Four colours. I could have used six, but a tighter palette makes the structure more legible. When the colour is restrained, you notice the relationships between the blocks instead of the blocks themselves.
The orange sits against the cool grey because warm against cool is the oldest move in the book and it still works. The rust and the near-black frame the composition without closing it. Nothing here is decorative.
