Your eye goes straight to the sofa, and the sofa is screaming pink.
Three men are carrying it across Ocean Drive, mid-stride, while a fashion shoot happens around them. Everything else in the picture is a clean black stencil on sun-bleached plaster. Cream, cracked, one patch painted over badly. Only the sofa gets colour.
The joke you catch on the second look
Nobody in this picture is looking at anybody else. The shoot is happening. The men are working. Neither side has noticed the other, and that is the whole gag – two Miamis sharing one street and ignoring each other completely. The least glamorous object on the block ends up being the only thing with any colour in it.
Luna cuts her stencils clean, sprays them on a wall that has seen things, and leaves exactly one hot colour to make the point. Here it is the furniture. Neon against neon, nothing cute about it. As she puts it: loud is a choice. I keep choosing it.
Ruby, who scored it, said Vasquez “masterfully captures the playful chaos of Miami with a burst of electric fuchsia.” Average across our critics: 8.33 out of 10.
Where it goes
Over the coffee machine. In the hallway you move through fast. Behind the bar. Somewhere you get greeted by it rather than somewhere you sit and contemplate it. Guests will ask about the sofa within about four seconds, and you will tell the story every time.
Getting it up
A high quality canvas print of a digital artwork, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep. The image runs round the sides, so there is nothing missing at the edges and no frame to buy. It arrives ready to hang – one nail, done, no framer and no surprise bill. Matte, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the picture back instead of a glare. Made to order in up to ten business days, which means nobody else on your street has this one. Free shipping in the continental US.
12 x 16 in (30 x 41 cm) is $129. The 18 x 24 in (46 x 61 cm) is $149 and it is the one most people pick. 24 x 32 in (61 x 81 cm) is $229 if the wall is wide. That is the price – no bidding, no premium.
Who should skip it
Not a bedroom. Not any room meant for rest, and not for anyone who wants the art to match the sofa they already own. This one argues on purpose.
If that made you laugh, take it home. If you want to see the rest of Luna’s Miami first, her other pieces are here – or follow her and you will see the next one before anyone else.
