Heel Against Yellow: Moreau earns the Fauve claim

The yellow wall does what Matisse's did—it pushes forward instead of receding, and the figure has to stamp harder to hold the space.

She knows what the label cost

Fauvism was not about being loud. It was about making colour do structural work—the thing that perspective and chiaroscuro had done for four hundred years, colour now had to do alone. That required a different kind of looking, and most painters who tried it produced decoration. Moreau does not. Her chrome yellow wall in Heel Against Yellow sits at the same depth as the dancer’s shoulder, which means the foot has to drive downward with real force to register as forward motion at all.

The red ruffles, built up with a palette knife, are the only place she lets texture carry the speed, and she is right to—everything else holds still so that stamp can land.

The practice is consistent

This is her ninth dancer in a tiled interior, and by now the terms are clear: saturated colour, patterned ground, one gesture frozen mid-phrase, knife work only where the motion peaks. She does not wander. Other artists working this territory add musicians, add gold leaf, add curtains—Moreau keeps the variables down and changes one thing at a time, the way someone working through a problem does. Here it is the wall plane. In the last piece it was the angle of the fan.

That accumulation is what a body of work looks like before anyone calls it that.

Movement earned

The Fauves worked together for three years and most of them spent the rest of their lives explaining they had not meant to be decorative. Moreau will not have that problem. Her dancer is moving against the colour, not inside it, and that difference is the whole question. A viewer who wants to see what she does next can start at this piece, which holds the terms steady while she works.
