The chair is still pushed back. Somebody stood up a minute ago and the cloth has not finished moving. Cloth Still Turning is Isabelle Moreau’s empty-cafe still life, built in her Cafe Fauve world: a fan left on the table, a shawl over a rail, a glass half finished, a window onto the sea. No figure in it at all. You already know which wall in your house is furnished but not finished, and it is probably the one you stopped looking at.

What is still moving in Cloth Still Turning

The white cloth spills off the table on the diagonal and it has not settled.

Cadmium red behind it. Chrome yellow where the warm side light lands. Cobalt in the window, because the sea is out there and the window is not large.

One shadow in this picture falls the wrong way, and Moreau left it exactly where it was.

The table sits off-centre, low in the frame, so your eye drops to it and then climbs the cloth back up to the empty chair. The chair is turned out, not tucked in. Somebody pushed it.

A fan set down mid-gesture. A shawl over the rail with the afternoon coming through the weave of it. A glass half finished, which is the detail that tells you she is not coming back for it.

Patterned cloth runs through everything she paints, and the pattern is painted as carefully as the person.

Her own line is this: I paint the ten seconds before they notice you are there. This one is the second after. The dance ended, the table emptied, and the colour stayed in the room.

The hour Isabelle Moreau sat through

Hang it where the daylight moves.

In the morning the cobalt keeps the room cool and the cloth reads nearly grey. By four the red has taken the wall and your own light agrees with the light in the painting. Then the sun goes and the chrome yellow is the last thing in the room you can still see.

Three critics in this gallery scored it. The average is 8 out of 10. Ruby wrote: “The saturated color fields and dynamic composition capture the moment the dance has just ended.” Valentina wrote: “A vibrant blend of color and movement that captures Isabelle Moreau’s signature style.”

Where this Cafe Fauve still life goes, and where it does not

A kitchen, a bedroom, a reading corner. Somewhere for a woman who wants warmth without sweetness and a picture that looks lived in. Cafes and dining rooms that want the room to move take it well, because the cloth does the moving for them.

It is not for a cool, minimal or corporate room. It is loud, and it will win any argument with grey.

Your sizing rule: the picture should run two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture below it. At 23.8 inches wide that means a console, sideboard or chest of roughly 32 to 36 inches, with the bottom edge a hand’s width above the surface. Guests will ask who left the chair like that.

The honest part, and the file itself

Every print in this gallery is a reproduction of a digital original. This is not a reproduction. This is the work itself, in the medium it was made in, at full size.

What you get, and nothing other than this:

  • One high-resolution JPEG, sRGB colour, 7168 x 9728 px
  • Prints to 23.8 x 32.4 inches (60.6 x 82.3 cm) at 300 dpi, which is as large as it should sensibly go
  • Personal use: print it as often as you like, at any size, for your own home. Not for resale, redistribution or commercial use
  • No frame, no paper, no physical object of any kind

That pixel count means the grain stays in the shadows at the full stated size, so the wall decides how big this gets, not the file. Take it to any print shop or online printer and ask for matte or textured fine art paper. Gloss will fight the colour fields; matte lets the red sit.

Nothing is posted, nothing is waiting, nothing can arrive damaged. The link is on your order confirmation page and in the email.

The price is $19. A free wallpaper falls apart past A4, a subscription rents you somebody else’s stock, and a framed print at ten times this cannot be replaced when four summers of sun have taken the yellow out of it. You can print this one again.

Before the light drops

The cost of choosing wrong is your money and your wall, so the cheaper way to be sure is the file.

Hang it, and the cloth is still turning on your wall at four in the afternoon.
