Flight Before Impact: Every Abuela Had Perfect Aim

The chancla flies. The dog knows what's coming.

I painted the slipper bigger than the dog because that’s exactly how it felt.

Chris Vega. Loud Line. I paint LA street moments in thick black cartoon lines over spray colour because the city taught me funny beats pretty every single time. What I keep coming back to: the stuff everybody knows but nobody put on a wall yet. This one is about respect, delivered airborne.

The chancla never missed

Every kid who grew up with an abuela knows this scene. The warning, the reach, the flight. I wanted the exact second before impact—the dog frozen mid-step, the slipper huge in the frame, rotating slowly like a heat-seeking missile.

The lettering goes LA CHANCLA because some things don’t translate and shouldn’t. You say it in English, you lose the whole feeling. I hand-painted those letters so they look like they were rattlecanned on a bus stop, because that’s the register this lives in.

Ruby said the piece captures street-art style with vibrant colours and humour. That’s the deal—if it doesn’t make you smile first, I didn’t do my job.

The dog is all of us

I drew him like a 1950s cartoon character because I wanted that Tex Avery moment of recognition: eyes wide, legs splayed, no escape possible. That freeze-frame panic before the inevitable.

The spray background is loud yellow-orange fading to pink. Hot, noisy, Los Angeles summer energy. The kind of day where chanclas come off fast.

For anyone who heard “ya vas a ver”

This is for people who grew up bilingual, who know exactly what’s about to happen in this picture, and who will text a photo of it to their cousins with zero explanation needed.

If you never got the chancla, you can still hang it. It’s funny either way. But you won’t quote it at family dinner the same.
