Nobody is in the box.

No caller, no hand on the receiver, no face anywhere in the frame. Whoever was in there has gone, and they left the colour behind.

What the door is doing

The phone box sits in clean hard grey. Vector edges, flat London-grey ground, the kind of grey you walk past without looking up. Then orange comes out of the doorway. Magenta, cyan, yellow behind it, poured and sprayed, dripping down the pavement side with overspray hanging in the air.

Here is the bit most people miss. The door is only half open. The colour is squeezing through a gap it doesn’t fit through. Close the door and there’s no picture; open it fully and the pressure disappears. Kai left it at half, and that’s the whole thing.

He builds the grey world exactly, down to every panel line, then lets one element go completely. One burst per piece, always leaving the subject, never decorating it. As Ruby put it, the vivid eruption contrasts the sombre grey and makes the piece both energetic and compelling.

What happens once it’s up

It reads as energy with no slogan attached. Nothing to agree with, nothing to explain. People stand in front of it and work out that the colour is coming out rather than going in, and that’s usually when they ask who made it.

Getting it on your wall

It’s a canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, and the image wraps the sides so there’s no white border and no frame to buy. It arrives ready to hang – one nail, done before the kettle boils. Matte surface, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the orange back instead of a glare.

Landscape. The 20 x 16 in (51 x 41 cm) is preselected and suits most walls at $149. There’s a 14 x 11 at $129 and a 24 x 18 at $229. High quality print of a digital artwork, made to order, so nobody on your street has this one. Free shipping in the continental US.

One honest thing

This is loud. If you like your walls soft and tonal, it will fight you. If you want one thing in the room with a pulse, it’s this.

Follow Kai and you’ll catch the next burst first. Or look through the rest of the grey world he’s built. Or take this one home now and let the orange out.
