Unchecked Appetite: hot pink that refused to stop

Paint laid down fast and left alone, at the scale that makes wanting visible.

I work at four metres because that is the size where a single gesture stops being decoration and becomes a fact in the room. Unchecked Appetite is hot pink that started in the centre and kept going, past where I planned to stop it, out to the edge where it is still wet-looking even dry.

The impasto is thick enough to cast shadows. That is not metaphor—move past the canvas and the light changes on the ridges.

The pink refuses containment

I laid the hot pink down in one session, loaded the brush until it could barely move, and let the gesture run its course. Where it thins at the edges you can see the speed. Where it piles up in the centre you can see the weight of the pigment fighting the motion.

Magenta comes in after, not to correct but to push—more heat, more refusal. The ridge where the two meet is where the paint is thickest.

One red diagonal that fails

The red slash is the only vertical energy in the piece. It tries to fence the pink in and cannot. I put it there knowing it would lose, because appetite that can be stopped is not appetite, it is just decoration.

The diagonal sits on top of everything else. You can see where the brush skipped over the wet impasto beneath and left gaps.

This is not about control

Scale expressionism works because the body cannot fake a four-metre gesture. Your arm knows if you hesitated. The pink reads as wanting because I wanted it to go further and then let it.

Every piece in this run leaves one colour unchecked. The rest of the canvas has to deal with it.

This is for people who want a room to feel like something happened in it. Not for people who need art to match the sofa or calm anything down.
