The shadow is not a shadow. One lantern on a post, amber at the core, the dusk around it running violet into indigo. Then the dark on the ground lengthens into a neck, a beak, one folded wing.

Post Casting Heron is Carmen Delacroix in her HIDDEN DUSK register: a lamp, a post, and a heron nobody announced. Which wall in your house has been waiting three years for something to happen on it?

What the children find first in Post Casting Heron

Children go to the floor first. They find the beak before they find the lantern, and they announce it from the doorway as though you had been hiding it on purpose.

Adults take longer, which is the better half of it.

Your eye wants the glow. One soft source, amber at the centre, falling off through peach and violet until the indigo takes the rest. Very few forms: a post, a lamp, a ground plane, a sky that is mostly gradient.

So the shadow reads as a shadow. For a day. Sometimes a week.

Then the neck arrives, and after that you cannot unsee it.

Three critics scored this one and the average came in at 8 out of 10. Charlotte wrote: “The heron’s silhouette is a delightful surprise that rewards attentive viewers.” Ruby wrote: “The piece uses color and shadow cleverly to reveal a hidden heron.”

Why Carmen Delacroix hides the heron last

She builds the ordinary scene first, post and lantern and dusk, then tucks the second picture in at the end. Dusk light, every time: the last hour of light, never noon. In her words, logic takes a back seat; it does not leave the car.

And she will not tell you what else is in there.

On a wall it behaves. The flat dusk gradients hold their colour under a lamp at 9pm instead of going muddy, which means the hallway, the stairwell and the wall by the back door are live options rather than compromises.

It is for a room where people talk, for someone who wants the piece a guest asks about and is happy to answer. It is not for a room that wants to be restful, and not for anyone who needs a picture to explain itself at first glance.

Where would you hang something your nine-year-old will solve before you do?

What $19 buys, and what it does not

This is the artwork itself, not a print of it and not a photograph of one. Every print in this gallery is a reproduction of a digital original. There is no paper in between here, so nothing is lost on the way to you.

  • One high-resolution JPEG, sRGB colour, 7168 x 9728 px
  • Largest sensible print 23.8 x 32.4 inches (60.6 x 82.3 cm) at 300 dpi
  • Personal use: print it as many times as you like, at any size, for your own home. Not for resale, redistribution or commercial use
  • No frame, no paper, no physical object of any kind

Those pixels mean the grain stays in the dark where the heron is standing, all the way out to the full size.

The wall decides how big this gets, not the file.

A free wallpaper comes apart past A4. A subscription rents you stock images and stops the day you stop paying. A framed print runs ten times this and cannot be reprinted when four summers of window light have pulled the violet out of it, while you can print this one again, in 2031, for the cost of the paper.

The link sits on your order confirmation page and in the confirmation email. Nothing is posted, so there is nothing to wait for and nothing that can arrive damaged.

What to ask the print shop, and where this one ends up

Take the file to any print shop or online printer and ask for matte or textured fine art paper. Gloss throws a highlight straight across the dark the bird is hiding in.

One sizing rule, and it is the only one you need: a single picture should run about two-thirds the width of the furniture under it. At full size that sits over a 36-inch sideboard, bench or console with air to spare. Wider wall, keep it full size and give it its own stretch of plaster rather than pushing the file past what it holds.

It also sits quietly behind desktop icons, and on a phone people find the heron by the second scroll.

Nineteen dollars, one file, your wall.

The first evening the hall lamp is on, look at the floor of the picture.
