Late afternoon, the back end of summer, and the wall has been drinking heat since morning.

That is the whole picture. Old stone, standing upright, holding a full day of light inside it. Terracotta and ochre laid on thick, olive shadow in the seams, and the low gold coming across it sideways so every ridge of paint throws its own small shadow.

Look at the bottom left

Rosemary. Pushing up out of nothing, right where the stone meets the ground. It is the one living thing in the frame and Marco put it exactly where your eye lands last, so you find it a second after you think you have finished looking. That is the detail you will point out to people. It is also the one that makes you remember standing close enough to a hot wall to smell the herbs going wild at the base of it.

He works with a knife, not a brush. Nothing blended, nothing tidied. Every decision stays where he left it, which is why the surface looks like it would catch raking light from your own window. Ruby called it thick ridges of paint and vivid color embodying the sun-baked warmth of Tuscany’s ancient walls. That is fair.

What happens once it is up

Still Holding the Sun – Marco Bellini | Fine Art PrintIt warms a cold room. Not a metaphor – the colour genuinely changes how a hallway feels in February. Morning light flattens it. Evening lamplight brings the ochre right forward and the wall looks like it is still holding the heat.

Getting it on your wall

Canvas over solid wood, an inch and a quarter deep, with the image carrying round the sides. It arrives stretched and ready to hang – one nail, done, no frame to buy and no extra bill. Matte, so a bright window opposite gives you the painting back instead of a glare.

Most people take the 16×20 (41 x 51 cm) at $149. There is a 12×16 at $129 and an 18×24 at $229 if your wall is taller than it is wide. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order, so nobody on your street will have this one. Free shipping in the continental US, and up to ten business days while it is made.

One honest thing

It is unapologetically warm. If your room is all cool greys and glass, this will fight it. Near wood, linen, books or a kitchen, it belongs immediately.

Still Holding the Sun – Marco Bellini | Fine Art PrintTake it home if that is your room. If you are still deciding, have a look at the rest of Marco’s walls and fields – or follow him, and the next one turns up in front of you first.

One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.

Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Marco Bellini available.
