There is one dark post standing in the water. It is small, it is off to itself, and it is the only firm thing in the whole frame. Sofia put it there so your eye has somewhere to land. Take it out and the picture drifts. Leave it in and you keep going back to it, the way you check a boat is still there.
Look at how low she set the horizon. Almost everything above it is sky, and that sky is not one colour – it shifts by degrees, cold air holding warm light, with no hard edge anywhere except where the water meets it. Sofia works by removing things. Two or three elements, never more. Ruby called it a tranquil Nordic landscape that catches the essence of dawn, and Charlotte said the gradients draw you in. They do.
