Yuki made the chair too small. Not by accident. It sits lower and further off-centre than any sensible composition would allow, and that single decision is why the picture works.

A chair, turned away from you. Indigo ink, paper-white, one soft shadow. Everything else is empty.

What the emptiness is doing

Cover the chair with your thumb and the page goes silent. Move your thumb and the whole sheet leans toward that one shape. The chair is not the subject. The room around it is, and the chair is what proves the room is there.

Somebody was sitting in it. Yuki never tells you who, or whether they are coming back. That is the part you keep going back to. As Valentina put it: “Emptiness becomes presence: a single chair, turned away, leaves more behind than most paintings can hold.”

This is how Yuki works. One object, two-thirds nothing, not a single mark that is only there to decorate. Flat, quiet, exact.

Living with it

It does not compete. Hang it in a hallway, a bedroom, above a reading chair, and it lowers the volume of the whole wall. People notice it late, on their second visit, and then they cannot stop looking at it.

What Remains Unsaid – Yuki Tanaka | Fine Art PrintCharlotte called it “the kind of piece that makes a room feel like someone finally listened.” That is about right.

The paper matters here

Heavyweight archival matte, completely non-reflective, so the empty white stays soft instead of throwing your ceiling light back at you. Printed edge to edge, no white border, which means it drops straight into any frame you already own and looks right pinned up bare.

Portrait. 11×14 in (28×36 cm) at $49, 16×20 in (41×51 cm) at $79, 18×24 in (46×61 cm) at $109. The 16×20 is preselected and suits most walls. Made to order, so nobody else on your street has this one. Free shipping in the continental US.

One honest thing

If you like a wall that is full, this will look unfinished to you. It is meant to.

What Remains Unsaid – Yuki Tanaka | Fine Art PrintTake it home, or spend ten minutes with the rest of Yuki’s work first. Following her costs nothing, and you will see the next one before anyone else does.

One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.

Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 5 other works by Yuki Tanaka available.
