Every roof in this picture is roughly the same warmth. Marco keeps them there on purpose – terracotta, ochre, more terracotta – so nothing competes. Then he puts one glow of lamplight in and the whole hill changes meaning. It stops being buildings. It becomes somebody’s house, with somebody in it, waiting on you.
He works knife only. No brush. The paint stands up off the surface in ridges you can read like handwriting, each drag left unblended, so raking afternoon light catches the roofs and throws small real shadows across them. Nothing here is smoothed over. That is the point of him.
